I.C. 95% = .730-.790) satisfactorios.

The research aimed at analysing attitudes towards homosexuality recommends the use of instruments that can detect subtle aspects of dis-crimination against gay men and lesbian women. It also asserts that the measurement invariance of constructs is essential for valid comparisons between groups. The present study aims to validate the Modern Ho-monegativity Scale (MHS) in university students in the fieldof education (N= 1.283) with an age range of 17 to 49 years old (M = 2.88; SD = 3.02). In addition, we seekto examine the measurement invariance of the MHS in relation to certain sociodemographic and personal variables (e.g. gender identity), as well as ideological variables (e.g. political inclination). The re-sults provided evidence of the scale'sunidimensionality and a high degree of internal consistency (MHS-G= .879; MHS-L= .906), as well as satisfac-tory fit indices (CFIMHS-G= .95, CFIMHS-L= .97; RMSEAMHS-G= .064, 90% CI: .057-.071, RMSEAMHS-L= .059, 90% CI: .052-.066) and external validity values (MHS-G and AN-T: r= .753, CI 95% = .722-.785; MHS-L and AN-T: r= .76. CI 95% = .730-.790). They also indicated that both the subscales –towards gay men (MHS-G) and lesbian women (MHS-L) –are invariant constructs according to the variables studied. The findings point to the validity and measurement invariance of the proposed model for comparing levels of modern homonegativity between the groups studied.(AU)

(AU)

In the context of the rise of right-wing extremism and the political articulation between Christianity and neoconservatism, this thesis investigates the knowledge and practices of contemporary Brazilian feminists' and gender and sexuality dissidents' Christian collectives, their practices and discursive and pedagogical strategies. To this end, it seeks to situate the "religious problem" in its articulations with secularist ideas and, in the current context, with the so-called "neoconservatism" and "neoliberalism", as well as its participation in the so-called "crisis of liberal democracies". It also seeks to examine the so-called "progressive Christianity" and how it relates to the activity and rise of such religious/Christian forces. Dialogue with voices from the Global South is privileged, as well as with authors racialized as non-white, gender and sexuality dissidents, inserted in the so-called decolonial theoretical framework or prior to its delimitation, but pioneers in denouncing epistemic violence and in criticizing binary, pure and coherent structures supposedly constructed by colonial modernity in its process of creating otherness.

This article aims to produce a historical analysis of the intersections between Psychology and sexualities that deviate from the norm in Brazil, from the late 19th century to the mid-1980s. This period was chosen because it encompasses the emergence of scientific research on sexuality and sexual deviations, the consolidation of psychological studies on the subject and the most recent process of de-pathologization of homosexuality. Theoretically and methodologically, the assumptions of the Social History of Psychology and the historiography of homosexualities in Brazil were adopted. Therefore, we sought to understand how psychological ideas, conceptions and practices have changed over time, in connection with the sociocultural and political transformations that occurred throughout the 20th century. For this, primary and secondary sources of research were used to produce interpretations about the connections between the ideas, the actors and the narrated events. It is argued, throughout the article, that the psychological ideas and practices are intrinsically connected to the sociocultural and political contexts of their time, being the dynamic movements and conflicts present in these contexts determining factors for their constitution.(AU)

RESUMO

In light of the rising number of children born outside of formal marriage, there is increasing concern about the well-being of these mothers and children, especially since they mostly come from disadvantaged populations. This study aims to determine the role religion plays in the experience of nonmarital fertility. This study draws on data from ten in-depth interviews with women in Durban, South Africa. The study found that women did not anticipate the negative impact of nonmarital fertility prior to experiencing their first birth. The main reason contributing to the experience of nonmarital fertility was the lack of sex education. Many women believed that Islam allowed only married women to use contraceptives because unmarried women are expected to practice celibacy and their religion advocates for a two-parent household. As a result, unmarried women with children found themselves often ostracised from their community. The study recommends a comprehensive sexual education regime to address the challenges associated with non-marital fertility. (Afr J Reprod Health 2022; 26[7]: 49-58).

ABSTRACT Objective to analyze the association between experiences in older adults' sexuality and biosociodemographic characteristics. Method a cross-sectional study developed with 3,740 older adults. The participants filled out two instruments to obtain the biosociodemographic variables and on the experiences in sexuality. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with a 95% confidence interval for all analyses. Results there was a predominance of male participants (62.6%) who never received guidance on sexuality from health professionals (77.6%). The best experiences in sexuality were observed among male participants (p=0.002), aged between 60 and 74 years (p<0.001), self-declared brown (p<0.001), adherents to religions of African origins (p<0.001), who have a single partner (p<0.001), who live with their spouse for five years or less (p<0.001), who do not have children (p<0.001) and homosexuals (p<0.001). Conclusion and implications for practice all biosociodemographic variables were significantly associated with at least one dimension of the sexuality scale. In this sense, health professionals will have scientific and current evidence of the variables that most need attention in elder care with regard to their sexuality.

RESUMO

Stroke is a principal cause of mortality in China and Japan. High systolic blood pressure (SBP) was considered a chief risk factor for stroke mortality. Herein, we evaluated temporal trends of high SBP-attributable stroke mortality in China and Japan between 1990 and 2017. Data on stroke mortality were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 (GBD 2017). Using the age-period-cohort method, we computed overall net drifts, local drifts, longitudinal age curves, and cohort/period rate ratios (RRs) for high SBP-attributable stroke mortality. The age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) displayed decreasing trends for high SBP-attributable stroke mortality. The annual net drift values were - 1.4% and - 3.5% in Chinese men and women versus - 3.1% and - 4.9% in Japanese men and women. The local drift values in both countries were < 0 among all age groups but were lower in women than in men. The longitudinal age curves showed a greater high SBP-attributable stroke mortality in men than in women across all age groups. Similar decreasing patterns were shown in the period and cohort RRs in both sexes with women having a quicker decline than men. In China and Japan, the ASMRs, as well as the period and cohort RRs of high SBP-attributable stroke mortality, decreased between 1990 and 2017 in both sexes and across all age groups. Yet, the prevalence of high SBP remained worrisome in both countries. Thus, SBP control should be encouraged to prevent stroke mortality.

RESUMO

The current study utilized data from the Social Justice Sexuality Project to investigate influences on psychological well-being of LGBT+ Muslims (N = 75) in the United States. Specifically, path analyses were used to examine the association between spiritual and religious engagement, LGBT community involvement, outness, and family support with psychological well-being. Control variables included lifespan Islam involvement, age, income, and the age at which the participant came out to themselves. Findings illustrate spiritual and religious engagement, outness, and income were all positively related to psychological well-being. Moreover, individuals who had converted to Islam but were not raised in the faith had significantly lower psychological well-being than those who had a consistent experience with Islam from their childhood until the time of the study. The present investigation provides critical contributions to the study of gender and sexual minorities in the United States and the experiences of currently practicing LGBT+ Muslims and those who were raised Muslim. Clinical implications and future research suggestions are discussed.

RESUMO

In Singapore, discrimination toward LGBT citizens has been reinforced through a monolithic notion of the traditional Asian family. This ethnography focuses on the lived experiences of 7 ethnic minority Malay Muslim "butch" individuals and their journey to parenthood. Drawing upon frameworks of intersectionality and piety, I explore how butches negotiate and reconcile their queer practices and desires as Muslim daughters around "coming out," foster children with same-sex partners, being a biological parent and their perceptions of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Reproductive futures, enacted by Malay Muslim butches, disrupt yet reinforce the durability of "natural" life trajectories scripted through conventions of marriage, family and fatherhood that have, insofar, excluded them. Further, their experiences also offer alternatives to existing literature on same-sex families that tend to render other nonwhite and/or non-Western queer family practices invisible.

RESUMO

This article serves as the first in a series of six articles providing a theoretically and empirically informed approach to understanding Muslim LGBTQ lives from an intersectional positive-growth framework, transformative intersectional psychology (TIP). Within this perspective, LGBTQ Muslims' religious, gender and sexual identities are mutually interactive and situated within the dynamic systems of power, privilege and oppression. This approach recognizes that LGBTQ individuals negotiate multiple minority identities as they navigate oppression and build pathways of resilience. In the present article, we provide an introduction to TIP and this theory's relevance to the distinct experiences of LGBTQ Muslims. We then conclude with an overview of the goals of this Special Issue, The LGBTQ Muslim Experience, and introduce the subsequent articles in the series. The articles in this Special Issue address the implications of transformative intersectional psychology for LGBTQ Muslim research, training and clinical practice.

RESUMO

This qualitative study critically examined, from an interpretive perspective, 14 life stories of LBTQ Muslim women across North America. This paper explored how LBTQ Muslim women navigated Muslim and LGBTQ hegemonic norms and exclusions as they negotiated and lived out identity intersections. Transnational and critical race feminisms, intersectionality, and critical Islamic liberationist approaches to gender and sexuality framed the project. The study findings suggested that LBTQ Muslim women resisted hegemonic norms by mapping out alternative paths grounded in Islam, and in living out lives in LGBTQ communities. Participants discussed their experiences of being "othered" within LGBTQ communities, how they challenged the notion of a monolithic Islam, how they expanded coming-out frameworks to include their own experiences, as well as how they asserted their own religious agency and resistance. Participants demonstrated that living out an intersectional identity was a complex task where constant negotiations of positionality were transpiring concurrently.

RESUMO

In March of 2017, the Russian LGBT Network received their first reports of police violence against individuals in Chechnya because of their perceived sexual orientation. In the following months, news spread of a campaign of forced disappearances and torture specifically targeting suspected homosexual men. Between December, 2018 and February, 2019, police carried out another wave of unlawful detentions of men on the basis of their sexual orientation. The reports of unlawful detentions and extrajudicial killings of queer men may seem surreal in a world that has slowly grown more progressive with regard to LGBT rights issues. And yet, this violence is the reality faced by gay and bisexual men in Chechnya under Ramzan Kadyrov, the hypermasculine Chechen leader. This paper explores the ways in which religious practice, imaginations of nature, and conceptions of gender have influenced Chechnya's current anti-LGBT climate.

RESUMO

In August 2017, evangelical Christian leaders comprising the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood gathered in Nashville, Tennessee, and authored a manifesto on human sexuality, which they titled "The Nashville Statement." The statement defines marriage as exclusively heterosexual and monogamous and decries any sexual behavior outside the covenant of marriage. Seemingly without realizing the differences among sex, sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity, the statement also asserts as biologically absolute and sacred a rigid sex binary that matches exactly with divinely ordained gender roles. In this essay, through a close rhetorical-critical reading of the Nashville Statement, I show how the statement's reliance on sacralizing binaries undermines its argumentative coherence. The statement's recognition of intersex people serves as its undoing, revealing a crisis in evangelical Christianity's ontology of human sex.

RESUMO

Little is known about the lived experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer (LGBTQ) Muslims living in Canada. Using an intersectional theoretical perspective and a qualitative methodology, this paper examines key themes emerging in the stories of six LGBTQ Muslim women and men living in Canada. The key themes emerging in this research were the tension between perceived family obligations and religious values, the ambiguous relationship with Islam, and coping with mental health issues. The research points to the importance of understanding such experiences as occurring in a matrix of identities and processes, as postulated by intersectionality theory.

RESUMO

This paper uses Pacific Research Methodologies (PRM) to explore intersectionality in how Korean gay men navigate culture, family, and religion in relation to coming-out publicly in Seattle. By framing this study within a Pacific itulagi (worldview), I construct an argument that posits that Korean gay men in Seattle-due to the Korean American community being intertwined with the Christian Church-often find their sense of ethnic identity and family relationally co-constructed by a Christian one. Informants navigated this using Narratives of Convenience (NoC), whereby they reveal their sexual identity to a family member(s) and together, build a story that projects a heteronormative image of the self to the wider Korean American community. Contextually, a NoC helps avoid friction in wider familial and community circles, permitting informants to live gay lives openly with partners in US society. A full coming-out narrative by contrast often had a detrimental effect on other informants.

RESUMO

The Non-religious have been growing in numbers in the United States over the past decade. Yet even with their now large numbers we know little about the differences between various versions of non-religious affiliation. Using 2014 survey data from the Public Religion Research Institute this paper examines the attitudes toward same-sex marriage and same-sex adoption of the non-religious. Two non-religious groups are examined Non-theists (atheists and agnostics) and the Religiously Disengaged (non-religious but not atheist or agnostic). Our hypotheses ask if Non-theists are more likely to support same-sex marriage and same-sex adoption than the Religiously Disengaged. The hypotheses are tested across regression models that account for lingering religiosity, religious upbringing, and knowing a homosexual person. The data indicate that there are significant differences between Non-theists and the Religiously Disengaged across all models, with Non-theists being more likely to support same-sex marriage and same-sex adoption than the Religiously Disengaged.

RESUMO

German-Jewish physician, sexologist and critical race theorist Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) was arguably one of the most significant sexual thinkers of the twentieth century and a renowned sexual minority rights advocate. Hirschfeld's sexual-emancipatory engagement has been widely acknowledged. But his groundbreaking universalization of sexual intermediariness and the resulting dissolution of binary, triadic or otherwise finite schemes of sexuality have been mostly ignored or misrepresented in intellectual history. A relevant exception in this regard is the way sexuality historian Manfred Herzer has shortly approached the "doctrine of sexual intermediaries" as the "key concept" of his thought. While assessing and setting in historical perspective Herzer's interpretive contentions, the present study foregrounds Hirschfeld's Darwinian-inspired, non-essentialist naturalism as the ontic support for the new sexual and race regime he envisaged. By conceptualizing the potential in-finitization of sexualities and races, Hirschfeld was envisioning an unprecedented path toward the Messianic-albeit a-theological-goal of intra-historic liberation.

RESUMO

In June 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court made a landmark decision to legalize marriage for same-sex couples amid nationwide debate and media coverage of this controversial issue. Using a content analysis of newspaper articles and television transcripts (N = 286) from top news outlets, this study examines the frames used in news coverage of same-sex marriage before and after the decision and tone of coverage by frame and medium. Findings suggest that frames and tone differed by medium, with television generally presenting more negative coverage and print more positive coverage. Results also suggest that some coverage frames were more negative than others and that the dominant frames of coverage differed from pre- to post-decision. This study helps improve our understanding of how the public was informed before and after a historic decision and illuminates the differences between frame and tone of coverage by medium, and by medium over time.

RESUMO

Little is known regarding the burden of sunburns leading to emergency department (ED) visits in the United States (US). The objectives of this research were to characterize the burden of sunburn ED visits, investigate predictors of severe sunburns, and evaluate risk factors for increased cost of care in patients presenting to the ED for sunburn. In this nationally representative cross-sectional study of the National Emergency Department Sample (NEDS, 2013-2015), multivariable models were created to evaluate adjusted odds for sunburn ED visits, seasonal/regional variation in sunburn ED visits, adjusted odds for second and third degree sunburns, and risk factors for increased ED expenditure. 82,048 sunburn ED visits were included in this study. On average, the cost of care for a sunburn ED visit was $1132.25 (± $28.69). The prevalence and cost of ED visits due to sunburn increased during the summer months. Controlling for sociodemographic factors, comorbidities, and hospital characteristics, patients presenting to the ED for all sunburns (and for severe sunburns) were most likely to be lower income young adult men. Older, higher income patients in metropolitan hospitals had more expensive ED visits. This research provides nationally representative estimates of visits to the ED due to sunburn in the US, as well as evaluates determinants for severe sunburns and more expensive sunburn ED visits. Ultimately, characterizing the national burden of ED visits due to sunburn is critical in the development of interventions to reduce the impact of sunburn ED visits on the US healthcare system.
